We headed off to Raleigh for her first DAN doctor visit which is a three hour drive, Backyardigans playing on the dvd player in the back (couldn't go anywhere without them). We meet up with Sierra's sister Amanda so she can help with Sierra while dad and I are talking to the doctor.

The staff was friendly as they should be at any doctors office. Sierra was hyper as usual, the stranger the place the more hyper she becomes. We sat in an office with the nurse and went over the entire list of symptoms, and she asked additional questions about her symptoms, living conditions, eating habits, family life, environmental things where we live, my pregnancy with Sierra, my other children, my dental fillings, and there was probably more but I can't remember it all. Sierra was good for a while but Amanda had to take her out after about 30 minutes. I don't think we really had to bring her, they didn't examine her, it's more about what symptoms she has that plots the course of treatment.

The doctor came in when the nurse was finished and they discussed the symptoms and what treatment they wanted to start with. The first thing they wanted to do was heal her intestines, so everything they gave her was toward those symptoms. They said you have to heal the intestines first so Sierra can properly absorb the nutrients that she needs to bring her body back in balance. Some of the symptoms she has is because her gut is messed up. Here is the list of stuff we had to give her after the first visit.

  • Vitamin A
  • L-Glutamine -amino acid for intestinal health
  • Saccharomyces -good yeast
  • Vitamin C
  • Similase -digestive enzyme
  • Ultra Flora -pro biotic
  • Melatonin -for sleep
  • Molybdenum -a supplement they said to take if we had a problem with yeast die off
  • Continue vitamin suppliments and cod liver oil
Then the Doctor told us he would need blood work done, he didn't want to stress Sierra out too much so he said he would get that at a later time. He also needed us to do a urine organic acid test profile (tests for yeast and other stuff), which we can do at home and send to the laboratory. Getting urine from a toddler who hates to even be wiped is a post in itself! He did a lot of other explaining about treatment, you know the hows and the whys, but I will leave that up to the doctors.

We then went to the vitamin guy Jeff, who gave us what we needed and a detailed schedule for dosage and administering. We didn't have to get it from him but it was convenient and we could be sure of getting the right stuff.  We paid $426 dollars for this visit, that is including the $200 dollars we had to pay earlier for the deposit, and we paid $131 dollars on vitamins. He didn't give us anything that needed a prescription yet, all of it was over the counter supplements. They gave us the urine collection kit and all the paperwork we needed for that, plus some pediatric urine collection bags. They gave us all the doctor's instructions and what we needed to file our own insurance. That was it and we drove home a little overwhelmed on how to do all this stuff.

This was Sierra's visit tailored to her needs and it changes from child to child. Please see a doctor for you own child's needs.
